EUROPARC Federation

Without hard work in nature protection there would not be such beautiful landscapes, old forests, diverse wetlands and wild species of plants and animals in developed Europe anymore. Those are our protected areas that give us the opportunity to enjoy the presence of pristine nature which is mostly lost everywhere else. In order to help the protected areas fulfil their mission of conserving the values of the nature for the future generations we have EUROPARC Federation.

EUROPARC Federation is a pan-European, non-governmental umbrella organization for protected areas. It was founded in 1973. Now it has grown and unites more than 500 protected areas like National Parks, regional parks, nature parks, nature reserves, biosphere reserves and other protected areas from 38 countries across Europe. The Federation brings together engaged people who work for a common aim - to preserve the nature heritage in Europe.

Key aims

The key aims of EUROPARC are to facilitate the establishment of new parks and protected areas, to promote good practice in the management of such areas, to raise the profile of protected areas in Europe and to influence the future development of public policies and programmes to the benefit of the protected areas. To fulfil these aims EUROPARC Federation has various working groups and projects and lots of activities are carried out by the Federation or in cooperation with it.

EUROPARC Nordic-Baltic Section

To make the work of the EUROPARC Federation more effective eight regional units - sections - have been established. The Nordic-Baltic Section is one and it represents organizations from the 8 Nordic and Baltic countries Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The Section was formally established in April 2003 by a decision of the EUROPARC Council. The Section has grown and now it brings together about 40 members in the Nordic and Baltic region.

The main goal of the Section is to promote exchange of information and expertise and encourage cooperation between the members, in order to improve the management of protected areas in the Nordic and Baltic countries. We are following the key aims of the EUROPARC Federation and maintaining active connection between our members and the Directorate of the Federation.

Organization

The work of the Nordic-Baltic Section is organized in line with the Statutes of the Section. Every member of the EUROPARC Federation who is situated in Nordic or Baltic country can become a member of the Section. Daily work and activities are directed by a president and a coordinator of the Section. The president is elected by the members of the Section every three years and she or he is working together with hers or his appointed coordinator. After each term of three years the presidency should preferably be rotated to be hosted by another member country. Members of the Section have meetings at least twice a year and one of the meetings is considered to be a General Assembly.
