In the EUROPARC Nordic-Baltic Section we are immensely proud and honoured that one of our members is the winner of the Alfred Toepfer Medal 2010 for outstanding nature conservation work. At this year’s conference in Italy, EUROPARC President Erica Stanciu handed over the medal to Lassi Karivalo, former senior advisor at Metsähallitus Natural Heritage Services, Finland.

The Alfred Toepfer Medal is awarded annually in recognition of a particular individual who has made a significant contribution to nature protection in Europe. And Lassi Karivalo’s work is certainly significant. For 40 year, he has devoted all his time to biodiversity conservation and species protection, protected areas and transboundary cooperation between nations. In EUROPARC he has been involved since 1992 and he was among the founders of the Nordic-Baltic Section. This year, at age 65, Lassi Karivalo retired from his position at Metsähallitus.

During the conference gala dinner in Pescasseroli, the nomination was presented by the Nordic-Baltic Section secretariat and it was a visibly moved and happy Lassi Karivalo who accepted the medal from EUROPARC President Erica Stanciu. After the ceremony, numerous colleagues and friends came up to congratulate and toast the medal winner.
