In the EUROPARC Nordic-Baltic Section we are immensely proud and honoured that one of our members was the winner of the Alfred Toepfer Medal 2019 for outstanding nature conservation work. Kaja Lotman was awarded the medal for her long influence on nature conservation in Estonia and across Europe through the EUROPARC Federation network.

The Alfred Toepfer Medal is awarded annually in recognition of a particular individual who has made a significant contribution to nature protection in Europe.

Kaja Lotman, hydrobiologist and ichthyologist from Estonia, has been working to maintain viable nature conservation in Estonia all her life. She and her husband initiated a recognition process “Young nature conservationist”, which acknowledges the work of a young Estonian nature conservationist. She has also promoted participatory approach and cooperation networks. She has excellent communication skills that has helped to achieve trust between locals and nature conservation bodies.

Kaja has been involved in nature conservation issues in Europe since 2000. She was the president of the EUROPARC Nordic-Baltic Section in 2012-2014 and member of EUROPARC Federation Council in 2014-2017.

During the EUROPARC Conference in Jūrmala, the Medal winner was announced, and it was visibly surprised and happy Kaja Lotman who accepted the Medal from Rolands Auziņš, Reginal Director of Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia. After the ceremony, numerous colleagues and friends came up to congratulate and toast the medal winner.
